Explain the order of life from smallest to biggest.
- Organelle
- Cell
- Tissue
- Organ
- Organ system
- Organism
What is a stem cell?
A stem cell is a single cell that can replicate itself or differentiate into many different cell types. Stem cells are being researched for many different purposes, from the regeneration of limbs to the fighting off of cancer.
What are the four types of tissue?
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscle
- Nervous
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
Protection from dehydration and invaders
What is the function of connective tissue?
Support, insulation, movement of materials around
What is the purpose of muscle tissue?
To enable movement
What is the purpose of nervous tissue?
Sensory, communication, coordinates body functions
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
Cardiac, smooth, and skeletal
What is the purpose of cardiac muscle?
It is responsibility for the contractility of the heart, and therefore the pumping action.
What is the purpose of smooth muscle?
It serves a variety of functions. It is in the stomach and intestines, where it helps with digestion and nutrient collection. It also in other places such as the urinary system, where it helps rid the body of toxins and balance electrolytes.
What is the purpose of skeletal muscle?
They enable humans to move and perform daily activities. They play an essential role in respiratory mechanics, maintaining posture/balance, and protecting vital organs.
How many organs are there in the human body?
78
What are the 11 organ systems?
- Skeletal
- Muscular
- Nervous
- Circulatory
- Endocrine
- Lymphatic
- Digestive
- Respiratory
- Urinary
- Reproductive
- Integumentary
What are the two different types of organisms?
Simple and complex
Explain the digestive systems of simple organisms
They consist of vacuoles or a gastrovascular cavity
