Gene therapy Flashcards
if there’s a problem in our genes can we fix it? explain
YES, using gene therapy
What is gene therapy
A process where scientists use vectors to correct defective genes
What is a Vector?
An agent used to insert DNA into a cell
(ex virus)
How does gene therapy work? what are the steps
Step 1: Viral DNA is removed so it cant harm us
Step 2: Copies of DNA that have normal gene are put into each virus
Step 3: Virus is used to infect cells so they can insert normal human DNA into the cells
What was a set back for gene therapy?
Jesse Gelsinger
After 4 days of gene therapy he
died of organ failure Caused by severe immune response to virus
when we insert genes can they activate other genes
YES (like cancer causing ones )
how did gene therapy help with inherited blindness?
Helped 12 patients almost restore 100% of their vision
what is Duchenne muscular dystrophy?
Leads to muscle degeneration
how did gene therapy help with deafness?
In pigs, scientists delivered gene to regrow hairs in cochlea
what was the Human Genome Project
Goals?
-Identify sequence of bases on all 23
human chromosomes
-Identify genes within those sequences
Who owns the human genome?
Genome Project was made public immediately
how often is new dated on the genome posted ?
24hrs
Who was involved in the Human
Genome Project?
scientists from 20 institutions in six countries.
Whose DNA was sequenced for the
Human Genome Project?
ANONYMOUS to protect volunteers who provided DNA samples
who was the Sanger sequencing developed by?
Developed by Frederick Sanger in 1977
