Gene Mutations Flashcards
Mutagens
Something outside the body
Gene Mutations
- Change in DNA sequence ( Order of nucleotides ) = change in proteins ( order of amino acids )
- Increase genetic variation
- Can be good or bad
- Caused by Mutagens
Frameshift Mutation
• 1 out of 2 that gene mutation separates into
• adding or deleting nucleotides
• Affects ever amino acid following the mutation
ex:
ORIGINAL: AUG|CCT
MUTATION: AUC|CT
Deletion
• Subtracing a nucleotide in the bad sequence
• 1 out of 2 groups Frameshift separates into
ex: ABCDEF
ABDEF
Insertion
• Adding a nucleotide into a DNA strand
• 1 out of 2 that frameshift separates into
ex: ABCDEF
ABOCDEF
Translocation
• Taking a section of DNA from another part
• 1 out of 2 that insertion separates into
ex: ABCDEF
ABCXYZ
Duplication
• Duplicating a nucleotide in the base sequence
ex: ABCDEF
ABCCDEF
Point Mutation
• Change in 1 or few nucleotides
• affects only the amino acids at the mutation
• amino acids before or after remain the same
• 1/2 that gene mutation can separate into
ex: AUG|CCT
AAG|CCT
Substitution
• substitutes a nucleotide for another
• 1/2 point mutation can separate into
ex: ABCDEF
ABODEF
Inversion
• Fliping/inserting a section of nucleotides
•1/3 point separates into
ex: ABCDEF
ABEDCF
Silent
• The mutation codes for the same amino acid as the original strange
Missense
• +1 amino acids are changed which may cause a malfunctioning problem
nonsense
• Mutation results in a stop codon resulting in a shortened protein
