Gene expression Flashcards
1
Q
How does gene expression work?
A
The process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product. It refers to a gene being transcribed into mRNA and translated into a protein.
– When the product (protein) of a gene is made, it is expressed
– Traits are characteristics determined by the genes being expressed
– Genes can be switched off or on
2
Q
What is x-silencing or inactivation?
A
Where one of the X chromosomes in a female mammal is inactivated, which prevents female cells from producing double the amount of protein needed
3
Q
What is a genome?
A
All of an organism’s genetic information
4
Q
What is a proteome?
A
All of the proteins expressed by a genome
