Gene Expression Flashcards
Each gene has different possible forms called:
Alleles
What are alleles?
pairs of alleles determine a particular characteristic, one is dominant and the other is recessive
Define dominant and recessive alleles
each are represented through physical characteristics of the individual
dominant: represented by “B”
recessive: represented by “b”, only represented if dominant allele is absent
Define genotype and phenotype
genotype: genetic makeup of individual (BB, bb or Bb)
phenotype: physical appearance of individual
Principle of dominance
when individuals with different alleles reproduce, offspring will only express dominant trait
Law of segregation
each gene (allele) separates from the other so offspring will get only one gene from each parent
