The representation of gender and sexuality in literature and writing; how is it perceived and conveyed?
Importance of lens
Looking at a text from a lens in which binaries are resisted and gender is understood to be a social construct.
binary
classification of gender into two different opposite forms - masc. and fem.
Cisgender
identifying with the sex you were born - birth sex
Essentialism
sex and gender are binary - man and woman - both are distinct
Constructionism
gender is based on culture and experience - not bio
Gender
how people define themselves - either as man, woman, or non- binary - can extend to more identities such as genderfluid and more
Sexuality
who a person is attracted to - can include being gay, bisexual, Heterosexual, and more!
Heteronormativity
considering the members of the LGBTQ+ community as insignificant
Performativity
having the belief that binary and hetrosexuality is the norm
Queer
a derogatory term use to refer to the LGBTQ community - has been used in a positive way for individuals to convey their identity
3 views of gender
Gender as a spectrum
Two spirit - binary
No genders considered at all
three theories society is built on
Structural functional theory - human behaviours that help keep society organized and functioning - complementary skill sets for men and women - creates marginalized populations such as the LGBTQ+ community
Symbolic interaction theory - look at gender on a micro level - how gender guides day to day life
Social conflict theory - how gender distributes power within society
