archetypal theory Flashcards
main idea
Apart from individual unconscious, focus is on collective conscious
A storehouse of knowledge, experiences and images shared by mankind - a storage for these things called archetypes
importance of lens
Literature is a conversation between texts and patterns
Repetition and patterns is due to collective unconscious - all of mankind shares archetypes which causes similar responses (similar myths developed among groups who did not know each other)
hero journey myth (12)
Highlights how most stories with a hero in them follow similar patterns (call to adventure, assistance, departure, trials, approach, crisis, treasure, result, return, new life, resolution, status quo)
archetype
component used across multiple texts demonstrating a pattern (character, theme, plot, etc.)
Jung’s theory:
every individual has a personal conscious and a collective unconscious
Every conscious includes a persona, anima/animus, and The shadow
Personal unconscious
an individual’s ideas
Collective unconscious
universal images and ideas we hold from birth
Persona
the mask put on in public to be favorable or acceptable in society
Anima/Animus
“inward” face of one’s personality that represents the other gender
The Shadow
the “animal” nature: powerful, instinctive, spontaneous - evil within us
Jung’s 12 archetypes
caregiver, creator, explorer, hero, innocent, jester, lover, magician, outlaw, regular (belong here), ruler (exert control), sage (share wisdom)
