gender differences in SZ Flashcards
Give a piece of research on gender differences in SZ.
Goldstein looked at gender differences in SZ across 1970-80 . all ppts had been hospitalised for less then 6 months and then returned back to families.
length of stay was social functioning
number of rehospitailsations was premorbid functioning
men have poor outcomes then women with SZ suggesting that there is a gender difference
how did Goldstein collect data
- symptoms were rated by interviewers (standardised questions were asked)
- pre-morbid functioning (measured using a questionnaire)
- course of illness (number of rehospitalisations and length of stay in hospital)
what were Goldsteins findings
give 2 quantitive and 2 qualitative as well as an overall conclusion.
she found that men (2.24) has twice as men rehospatilsations then women over a 10 year period (1.12)
men (418 days) tend to stay in hospital twice as long as women (207 days)
length of stay was social functioning
number of rehospitailsations was premorbid functioning
men have poor outcomes then women with SZ suggesting that there is a gender difference
how good was the research.
use of secondary data, self report methods ie questionnaire and interviews. could be susceptible to demand characteristics and social desirability leading to ppt variables so we cannot establish that the ppts have not changed their behaviour to suit researchers aims.
collected a range of qualitative and quantitive data which is objective and increases the detail of the results.
