give some facts of AN
40 in 100000 10-14 year olds are diagnosed with AN
90-95% are female
1in10 are males with a prevalence of 0.2-0.3% in male lifetime (this is rising)
19% of British girls are AN
5-20% of untreated AN are thought not to survive (one of the highest mortality rates)
first develops ar 16-17 yo.
give some symptoms of AN
low BMI, bones breaking, loss of period, low self esteem, feelings of worthlessness, restricting food intake, excessive exercise, body dysmorphia, obsessing over weight loss/calories
what are long term complications of people with AN
fertility, loss of sex drive, problems with heart and blood vessels, kidney and bowl functioning, weakened immune system or anemia,
how does DSM V classify AN
you must meet all 3 criteria
1. restriction of energy intake must have an excessively low BMI 15% below normal.
2. fear of weight gain - this may cause them to engage in behaviours to prevent weight gain ie exercise
3. body dysmorphia
