-The feminist movement challenges traditional stereotypes of a woman’s role as solely that of a mother and housewife
- the feminist movement has had significant success in improving women’s rights and opportunities through changes in the law
These changes affect girls’ self image and ambition in regards to family and career

A

From 1970s onwards
-increased divorce rate
-increase in cohabitation
-decrease in first marriages
-increase in lone parent households

How has an in crease in female lone parents affected girls?

A

More women taking on a ‘breadwinner’ role which creates a new adult role model for girls( the financially independent woman)
-to get this independence, girls need high paying jobs and therefore good qualifications in school

3-CHANGES IN WOMENS EMPLOYMENT- what changes have been made and how does this affect girls?

A

1970 equal pay act- made it illegal to pay women less than men- pay gap between men and women has halved
-more women breaking through the glass ceiling
- number of women in employment has risen

Means that more girls see a future in work instead of being a housewife

4-GIRLS’ CHANGING AMBITIONS- what sociologist talks about this and what do they say?

A

SHARPE- shift in the way girls see their future

-1970s- girls had low aspirations and believed that success was unfeminine and being ambitious was unattractive, their priorities were love ,children and a husband

-1990s- priorities changed to careers and being able to support themselves
Girls were more likely to see their future as an independently woman with a career instead of a housewife

A

BECK- INDIVIDUALISATION
- in a modern society,independence is valued more than in the past, a career has become part of a woman’s life goals as it promises economic self sufficiency and in order to achieve this, girls know that they need a good education
