ETHNICITY DEA- INTERNAL FACTORS(1) LABELLING,IDENTITIES AND RESPONSES Flashcards
1-LABELLING AND TEACHER RACISM- what does labelling mean?
Attaching a meaning or definition to someone
1-LABELLING AND TEACHER RACISM-BLACK PUPILS AND DISCIPLINE- what do gillborn and youdell say?
GILLBORN +YOUDELL- found that teachers were quicker to discipline black pupils than others for the same behaviour
- they argue that this is the result of teachers’ racialised expectations, teachers expected black pupils to present more discipline problems and misinterpreted their behaviour as threatening or a challenge to authority
- when teachers acted on this misinterpretation pupils responded negatively resulting in further conflict
- black pupils felt that teachers underestimated and picked on them
- conclude that conflict between white teachers and black pupils stemmed from the teachers racial stereotypes rather than the actual behaviour of the students
- can explain the higher levels of exclusion
1-LABELLING AND TEACHER RACISM-BLACK PUPILS AND STREAMING- what does FOSTER say about this?
-teachers’ stereotypes of black pupils as badly behaved could result in them being placed in lower sets than other pupils of similar ability. Streaming black pupils on the basis of negative stereotypes about their ability can result in a self-fulfilling prophecy of underachievement
1-LABELLING AND TEACHER RACISM-ASIAN PUPILS-what do WRIGHT and ARCHER say?
WRIGHT- Asian pupils can also be victims of teacher labelling, teachers assumed that they would have a poor grasp of English and left them out of class discussions or used childish language when speaking to them
-teachers saw them as not a threat but as a problem they could ignore, this resulted in Asian pupils being pushed to the side and prevented from participating fully
ARCHER- teacher stereotype Asian girls as quiet passive and docile
2-PUPIL IDENTITIES- what does ARCHER say about this?
ARCHER- teachers defined ethnic pupils as lacking the identity of the ideal pupil
-IDEAL PUPIL IDENTITY- white, middle-class masculinised identity with a normal sexuality, seen as achieving in the ‘right’ way through natural ability
-PATHOLOGISED PUPILS IDENTITY- an Asian’poor’ feminised identity, either asexual or with an oppressed sexuality. This pupil is seen as a conformist overachiever who succeeds through hard work rather than natural ability
-DEMONISED PUPIL IDENTITY- a black or white WC, hypersexualised identity, this pupil is seen as unintelligent, peer-led,culturally deprived and an underachiever
-PUPIL IDENTITIES- CHINESE PUPILS- WHAT DOES ARCHER SAY?
-ARCHER- discusses how even minority pupils who perform successfully can be pathologised, Chinese pupils are simultaneously praised and viewed negatively by teachers who saw them as having achieved success in the wrong way through hardworking and conformity rather than natural ability, because of this, they could never occupy the identity of ‘ideal pupil’
