-Where men dominate society
-women in these societies are usually seen as emotional whereas men are seen as rational.

-not only should we challenge the man’s mindset but also the woman
-‘false consciounce’ even those who were independant
-women have fallen into the’second sex’ men’s ideal

-gender biology, identification and expression

What is the traditional Christian view on gender?
Gender is given by God
What is essentialist VS a existentialist
1) feminine and masculine characteristics are distinctive and intrinsic to there biology/ nature
2)notion of feminine and masculine but this is a product of nurture culture and upbringing as it is socially constructed
What is the Tradition Christian opinion on essentialist and existentialist?
They are essentialists citing Genesis 1 ‘male and female he created them’
Which philosophers believed that men and women aren’t equal?
-Plato, believed men were directly created from the Gods and given souls
-Aristotle, women inferior to men as men produce semen and so he believed women were simply a receiving end and so labeled them as ‘defective’
What is the view that men and women are simply equals?
-equally valuable but men and women have different complimentary characteristics
-Feminists take this role and they simply believe that there role should be recognized and celebrated
Why do Catholic and Orthodox Christians believe women still can’t ordained into priesthood?
Because Jesus only chose men as his disciples also God revealed himself as a man so men could only represent him.

-women should aim higher
-women are superior to men and by governing men it would lead to a peaceful society

feminine and masculine qualities are artificial and are set my cultural social norms through socialization.
Before the changes in the 20th century what was family life like?
Only consisted of the Nuclear family.
What are 3 examples of changes in family life?
-DIVORCE, Blended families and Single parents
-Laws HOMOSEXUALITY, same sex families
-Changes in WOMEN RIGHTS, delay of children or no children
What are three ways that religion responds to Secular Society?
Defend, clearly defined gender roles
Reconsider, they attempt to make teachings more inclusive
Reject, Christianity as it isn’t compatible with contemporary society or women’s right
What is the Sociological View of the family?
There was no ideal family that existed.
Why has the tradition Christian view been carried for so long?
Due to advertisements they portray this as a man being a breadwinner the women doing domestic chores.
Why can’t the concept of family be defined?
-there are different types e.g. immediate or extended
-there is also the existence of people who have children from previous relationships and join together as one there not related
Why is there now in the UK a higher proportion of families not from traditional families?
This is because people are no longer getting married.
What is Marriage seen as in Christianity?
A gift from God in some cases even a sacrament giving life long commitment to one another and being joined by God
