what did stephen gerard find?
the gender gap in achievement was fairly constant from 1975 to 1989, when it increased sharply. this was when gcses were introduced, bringing with it coursework (boys do worse in this)
what did eirene mitsos and ken browne find?
girls are more successful in coursework because they are more conscientious and better organised than boys/better at meeting deadline
what did janette elwood argue (ao3)
although coursework has some influence, it is unlikely to be the only cause of the gender gap because exams have much more impact on the final grade than coursework
what did jane and peter french find?
analysed classroom interaction and found that boys receive more attention because they had attracted more reprimansa
what did becky francis find?
while boys got more attention, they were disciplined more harshly and felt picked on my teachers who tended to have lower expectations of them
what did swann find?
also found differences in communication styles. boys dominate in whole class discussions whereas girls prefer pair and group work, and are better at listening and cooperating. girls speech involves turn taking and boys speech involves hostile interruptions (labelling?)
what did gaby weiner suggest?
argues that since the 1980s, teachers have challenged stereotypes in the curriculum - sexist images removed from learning materials. links to positive role models
what did david jackson suggest?
the introduction of exam league tables has improved opportunities for girls. this tends to lead to self fulfilling prophecy because girls are more likely to be recruited by good schools
what did roger slee suggest?
boys are less attractive to schools because they are more likely to suffer from behavioural difficulties and are four times more likely to be excluded
