Gender Non- Conformity
A
- The pressure to conform can cause a lot of stress
- Non- conformity can cause bullying, and gender dysphoria
- It is more socially acceptable for a girl to show masculine traits than for a boy to show feminine traits
- Male traits are highly valued in society E.g. assertiveness

- Gender segregation does explain development of gender identity
- And it reinforces their gender typical interests

Non Conformity explanations
A
- There is a strong link between gender non conformity and bullying
- Holt et al (2015)- Half of the children referred for gender dysphoria have experienced bullying
- Schiffman (2016)- Gender atypical adolescents more likely to be bullied than gender typical adolescents

Consequence of Gender in social approach
A
- There are other factors to be considered
- Not all bullying is gender related
- Finnish study- 75% of those with gender dysphoria who had experienced bullying had said that the bullying had started before they identified as gender atypical
- Their experience of bullying had nothing to do with gender atypicality
