- genetic male is not exposed to enough testosterone in the womb so looks physically female at birth
- these members were also raised as females
- however once hormonal changes took place during puberty the members changed to males physically and changed to living as males
What is gender identity disorder
- also known as gender dysphoria
- some people experience a mismatch in feelings between biological sex and psychological gender
- some people who experience this may have gender reassignment surgery and become transgender
Define intersex
- some children are inadvertently exposed to hormonal imbalances in the womb
- as a result genitals appear neither obviously male nor female at birth
- parents are encouraged to opt for surgery to make the child’s sex clear
- around 1 in 2000 babies are born with some level of intersex
What is meant by sex-role stereotypes
- a set of beliefs and preconceived ideas about what is expected or appropriate for males and females in a given society

Define Androgyny
Displaying a balance of masculine and feminine characteristics in ones personality
Describe the Bem sex role inventory
- measure of androgyny
- participants rate themselves on a 7 point scale on 60 characteristics
- scored on 2 dimensions (masculinity and femininity) and (androgynous, undifferentiated)
Name some BSRI traits for masculine and feminine characteristics
20 Masculine = aggressive, independent, risk taking
20 Feminine = warm, cheerful and shy

Strengths of the BRSI
+ high validity (50 males and 50 females judges rated 200 traits into masculine, feminine and neutral. highest 20 were chosen - piloted on 1000 students
