Gender Flashcards
Discourse
specific term that relates to representing facets of the world–processes, relations, structures of the world and thoughts, feeling and beliefs about the social world
heteronormative discourse
requires the assumption of heterosexuality and stigmatizes other sexualities
example of heteronormative discourse
straight acting
deficit model
women’s ways of speaking were ‘deficient’ compared to men
examples of deficit model
women less confident, use hedges and questions, less able to participate in discussion of serious activities in the social sphere
dominance model
in cross-gender conversations, women ask more questions than men, use more back-channeling signals (verbal and nonverbal feedback to suggest they are listening), encourage others to continue speaking, use more instances of ‘we’ and ‘you’ and do not protest as much as men when they are interrupted
difference model
men and women speak differently because they are shaped to do so by different life experiences that life subjects them to.
intersectional
Gender identity is thus not separate from these other identities
