Gen Chem L5-Atoms, Molecules and Ions Flashcards
What is the fundamental unit of matter?
ATOM
This is where the electrons orbit.
ELECTRON CLOUD
Three-dimensional regions where electrons are
most likely to be found in an atom.
ATOMIC ORBITALS
A Greek Philosopher who believed that matter is made of tiny particles (atoms) that cannot be divided or cut any further.
DEMOCRITUS
He proposed a model of the atom that is called the “Plum Pudding” model.
J.J THOMSON
He reasoned that all of an atom’s positively charged particles were contained in the nucleus. The negatively charged particles were scattered outside the nucleus around the atom’s edge.
RUTHERFORD
According to him electrons move in definite orbits
around the nucleus, much like planets circle the sun.
NIELS BOHR
He Found out that Electrons live like “clouds” or no distinct orbits Electron location can not be predicted.
SCHRODINGER
2 or more atoms which are bonded.
MOLECULE
Are atoms or molecules that have charges.
IONS
It contain only two atoms and normally occur in nature.
DIATOMIC MOLECULES
It contains three or more atoms.
POLYATOMIC MOLECULES
If the atoms are the same in element they are?
HOMONUCLEAR
If the atoms are in different in elements.
HETERONUCLEAR
Ions with Positive charge and this is a metal
