Gen Chem L2-Classification of Matter Flashcards
It contains only one kind of element or compound and it cannot
be separated by physical means.
PURE SUBSTANCES
Composed of two or more kinds of atoms that are chemically bonded together in fixed proportions.
COMPOUNDS
Composed of only one kind of atom and can be classified into metals, non-metals, or metalloids.
ELEMENTS
They have a shiny appearance, and it’s malleable and ductile. Also, a good conductor of heat and electricity.
METALS
Have a dull appearance and they are brittle. Inverse of metals because it has a poor conductors of heat and electricity but good INSULATORS and can prevent the transfer of heat and electricity.
NON-METALS
Have the properties of both metals and nonmetals.
METALLOIDS
Are made up of TWO or MORE SUBSTANCE
which mixed together but are not chemically
combined.
MIXTURES
Has only ONE PHASE and a uniform composition all throughout and it’s difficult to distinguish from one another.
HOMOGENOUS
Has TWO or MORE PHASE and it does not have a uniform
composition.
HETEROGENOUS
A mixture that has particles bigger than a solution but smaller than a suspension. It remains dispersed WITHOUT settling at the bottom of the container.
COLLOIDS
It has particles bigger than colloids and it contains solid particles that SETTLE at the bottom of the container.
