Gears Flashcards
Definition of a gear
A rotating machine part having cut teeth which mesh with another in order to transmit torque
What is the advantage of gears?
The teeth prevent slippage
What are the 5 categories of gears?
Spur, helical, bevel, hypoid, worm
Characteristics of spur gears?
Simplest and most popular type of gear, has straight cut teeth, only produces loads radially
What does open gearing mean?
A transmission that is not put together or gears that are not in a housing.
Do gears that are meshed together externally turn in the same or opposite direction?
Opposite
How would you get gears to turn in the same direction?
Idler, intermediate gear or an internal gear.
How do you get internal gets to turn in the opposite direction?
Planetary gears
What is the gear with the less teeth called?
Pinion
Characteristics of helical gears?
Angled teeth, quieter, capable of carrying higher loads and designed to take thrust loading
Two or more gears working in tandem are called what?
A transmission
How to find the speed ratio?
Number or teeth in the larger gear divided by number of teeth in the pinion
Difference between double helical and herringbone gears?
Herringbone gears do not have the groove that runs down the middle that separates the teeth, they touch and they have cut a lot deeper
Biggest advantage of a rack and pinion gear?
Converts rotary motion to linear motion
3 types of worm gears?
Cylindrical, single enveloping and double enveloping
