Belts Flashcards
Advantage of having a cogged belt?
They are more flexible and will wrap around small pulleys easier
3 types of v-belts?
Classic, wedge and fractional HP
3 types of belts?
V-belts, flat belts and toothed belts.
2 construction types for belts?
Raw edge and envelope
How do you know if the belt has a raw edge?
You can see the tensile cord on the side of the belt.
Why would you want to use envelope instead of raw edge?
Envelope will give the belt better protection from the elements.
The 2 components turning a belt are known as what?
The driver (smaller) and the driven (bigger)
The driven is always a what?
A pulley
The driver is the only one that changes, there are 3 types for v-belts, toothed and flat belts, what are they?
V belts - sheave
Flat belts - drum style
Toothed belts - sprocket
Advantages of flat belts?
They are flexible and can easily go around corners
Disadvantages of flat belts?
High tension
Biggest advantage that belts have over other drive types?
They act as a cluth to the system preventing catastrophic failure
How to know what the slack side is?
The side that is being pushed
How to know what the tension side is?
The side that is being pulled
What are the 4 parts of a v-belt?
- Cushion rubber
- Tensile cord
- Insulation rubber
- Backing fabric
How much deflection should you have in the slack side?
¼ per foot between each pulley
Advantages of wedge belts?
Provide more contact with the sheave and provide more support in the center of the belt
Fractional hp belts are designed to operate drives…..
Less than one hp
Timing belts do not use friction to transmit torque they rely on what?
Positive engagement of belt teeth with teeth of sprocket
