SOCIOLOGY
as a relatively stable set of perceptions of who we are in relation to our selves, others, and social systems. It is socially constructed in the sense that it is shaped through interaction with other people.
Self
means by which human infants begin to acquire the skills
necessary to perform as a functioning member of their society and is the most influential in
learning process one can experience.
SOCIALIZATION
is a social concept by CHARLES COOLEY stating that a person’s self grows out of society’s INTERPERSONAL INTERACTIONS and the PERCEPTIONS OF OTHERS.
Looking Glass Self
is the source of human nature and is characterized by close,
intimate, face-to-face interaction whose primary function is socialization
Primary group
refers to the larger and more disparate ‘nucleated group
whose members were rarely if ever all in direct contact.
Secondary group
The behavior of the individual can be understood only in terms of the behavior of the whole social group of which he is a member, since his individual acts are involved in larger, social acts which go beyond himself and which implicate the other members
of the group.”
THEORY OF SOCIAL SELF by GEORGE HERBERT MEAD
develops self by allowing individuals to respond to each other through symbols, gestures, words, and sounds. It conveys
others’ attitudes, emotions and opinions toward a subject or the person.
Preparatory Stage (imitation Stage) LANGUAGE
develops self by allowing individuals to take on different roles, pretend, and express expectation of others. Play develops one’s self-consciousness through roleplaying. During role-play, a person is able to internalize the perspective of others and develop an understanding of how others feel about themselves and others in a variety of social situations.
Play
develop self by allowing individuals to understand and adhere to the rules of the activity. Self is developed by understanding that there are rules in which one must
abide by in order to win the game or be successful at an activity
