GCSE Resistant Materials - Metals Flashcards
How do you mark metal?
- Straight steel edge and scriber (sharp straight line)
- Odd leg calipers (a parallel line)
- Engineer’s square (perpendicular angle)
- Mitre square/ Combination square (45• angle)
- Dot/ Centre punch (centre of hole)
- Centre Square (centre of round piece of material)
- Dividers (arches curves and circles)
- Template (an irregular shape)
How do you cut metal?
Hacksaw
How does Sand Casting work?
Metals, melted and poured into mould of special sand
How does extrusion work?
(Thermoforming plastics and) Metals, heated, then pushed through a die
How does die casting work?
Metal melted and forced into hardened tool steel mould
What is a ferrous metal?
Metals and alloys containing iron
What is a non-ferrous metal?
Metals and alloys that do not contain iron
What is work hardening?
Non-ferrous metal continuously bent, hit or shaped over period of time
What is annealing?
Heat and then let the metal cool. It’s molecular structure changes and can be cut and shaped more equally.
What is the finish galvanising?
Chemical process coats the base material in zinc
What is the finish anodising?
Electrolysis, acid + electrical current for protective layers on base material
What is the finish electroplating?
Chemically using electricity to add layers of other metals
What is the finish paint?
Spray or brush
What is the finish oil/grease?
Sprayed, rubbed or smeared onto exposed surfaces
What is the finish polish?
Machine buffing or by hand using a cloth
