What is a composite?
A term to describe material made by combining two or more materials together
What is temporary joining?
Using components with a screw thread
What is permanent joining?
A process that cannot be easily reversed
What type of drill is used for cutting holes at 1-13mm?
The twist drill
What type of drill is used for cutting holes at 13-40mm?
Spade drill/ Forster bit
What type of drill is used for cutting holes at >40mm?
The Hole saw
How does CAD relate to CNC machines?
CAD creates the design geometry; CAM designs the tool path while CNC uses the output from the CAM to actually make the part
How do jigs and formers work?
Holds pieces of material together so they can be joined
What is a cam lock?
A knock-down joint - drill shallow hole where cam is located, another hole is adjoining piece. shaft enters slot and slides up which locks it in and hole gets smaller
What is a corner block?
Knock-down joint - usually pressed against two pieces of material, screws used to fix block into position
How do you attach dissimilar materials?
Contact adhesive, applied both structures and air dried for ten minutes
What are some pros and cons of card modelling?
Pros:
- available in different weights and finishes
- easy to cut, crease, and shape
- easy to print onto
Cons:
- not that durable
- may not fit the design
What are some pros and cons of CAD modelling?
Pros:
- software flexibility
- design flexibility
- automatic specification checking
Cons:
- processing power limitations
- software complexity
- maintenance and upkeep
What is the relationship between the diameter of the drill and it’s rotational speed?
The larger the diameter of the drill used, the slower the rotational drilling speed
