What can HDI do?
Measure differences within country as well as between.
Highlight where poverty is at its worst.
Act as measure to show how much country has developed.
Help country set target to where it wants to be.
Causes of inequality-
Social- more country develops, more money has to be spent on education, health and housing.
Political- countries likely to develop quicker if they have stable government.
Environmental- countries more likely to develop if it avoids natural disasters.
What are the consequences of inequality in an LEDC?
Higher birth rate and infant mortality rate.
Greater natural increase and higher proportion of people U15.
Poorer education facilities, poorer health care, poorer diet and less electricity available.
More jobs in primary and informal sectors.
Less purchasing power per capita.
Why do LEDCs require aid?
Buying goods, do this by borrowing money from other countries.
Improvement of basic amenities and infrastructures.
Help when country suffers from a natural disaster.
