GCSE BIO CELLS TISSUES AND ORGANS Flashcards
Describe the special adaptions of a blood cell and what its purpose is.
The purpose of a red blood cell is to carry oxygen around the body. So that it maximises efficiency it has no nucleus and is a biconal in shape meaning that there is more room for haemoglobin which enables it to carry more oxygen.
What is Haemoglobin?
is the oxygen-transport protein in the red blood cells
what is a pheromone?
A pheromone is a chemical substance produced and released into the environment by an animal, especially a mammal or an insect, affecting the behaviour or physiology of others of its species.

Cell Membrane
What do ribosomes do?
Where protein synthesis takes place. All the proteins neededin the cell are made here.
What is the purpose of the cell membrane?
Controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
What is the purpose/function of cytoplasm?
the cytoplasm is a liquid gel where most of the chemical reactions needed for life take place in.
What is the function of the nucleus in a cell?
Controls all the activities of the cell it contains the genes on the chromosomes they carry the instruction for making new cells or new organisms.
What is the purpose of chloroplasts?
Chloroplasts are found in all the green parts of the plant. They are green because they contain the green substance chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs light energy to make food by photosynthesis. Root cells don’t have chloroplasts because they are underground and do not photosynthesis.
What is the function of the permanent vacuole?
The permanent vacuole is a space in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap and like the cell wall gives added ridgidity.
what is the purpose of the cell wall?(PLANT CELL)
The cell wall is made of cellulose that strengthens the cell and gives it support.
What is the function of mitochondria?
Mitochondria are structures in the cytoplasm where oxygen is used and most energy is released during respiration.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the Net movement of randomly moving particles in a fluid from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration down a concentration gradient.
Define a tissue
A tissue is a group of specialised cells that have the same sructure and function working together.
