Antacids
OTC and neutralizes stomach acid
Aluminum and Calcium can cause constipation
Magnesium can cause diarrhea
Histamine H2 Receptor Antagonist (tidine)
(h1 for allergies) used in stomach and ulcer treatment/prevention
Can cause decrease in vitamin absorption especially B12
Proton Pump Inhibitors (prazole)
Used for stomach acids and must be used everyday in order for it to work
H.Pylori Combinations
Treatment for H.pylori
Corticosteroids
Used for disease flare of ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s Disease and can also be used for inflammation
Must be taken with meals when administered orally
Adsorbent
Treats diarrhea, h.pylori, infection, and travelers diarrhea
Patients with allergies to aspirin should not use
Don’t give to children and can cause darkening of tongue/stools, constipation, nausea, and vomiting
Antimotility Drugs
Loperamide- use for 2 days max; used to treat diarrhea by slowing peristalsis
Can cause euphoria/addiction, dry mouth, blurred vision, and sedation
Antiflatulent Drugs
Relieves flatulent
Bowel Evacuants
Cleanse bowel prior to examination
Bulk-Forming Laxatives
Drains water and electrolytes into GI tract
Used for prevention of constipation and must be taken with 8oz of liquid
Osmotic Laxatives
Draws water into colon
Stimulant Laxatives
Can cause extreme stomach cramps and used with long term narcotic pain medications
Surfactant Laxatives
Prevents constipation
Serotonin Receptor Antagonist
Antiemetic treatment used for severe nausea prevention and treatment
