common cause of vomiting and diarrhoea
Staph aureus (bacteria)
commonly found from meat and creams
history of eating sandwiches
short incubation period
Campylobacter (bacteria)
common after a BBQ, eating poultry
complication - GBS
self-limiting
clarithromycin if >7 days
Bacillis cereus (bacteria)
common in re-heated rice
E.Coli (bacteria)
common in farmers
do not give antibiotics as it increases risk of HUS
Traveller’s Diarrhoea
most common cause is E.coli
Rotavirus
common in children
Norovirus
common from seafood
cruise ship, schools, hospital are common locations for outbreaks
Cryptosporidiosis (parasite)
common in children and HIV patients
Giardia (parasite)
common from swimming/drinking in a lake
travelling
lethargy, abdo bloating, non-bloody diarrhoea
metronidiazole

management
IV fluids and electrolyte replacement
antibiotics given if systemically unwell
