mechanism of action of acetylcysteine in paracetamol overdose

A
  • patacetamol metabolism> conjugation> NAPQI is hepatotoxic
    -usually detoxified by conjugation with glutathione but in paracetamol poisoning - glutathione pathway saturated so NAPQI freely causes liver damage
  • aceetylcysteine replenishes the body’s supply of glutathione
