Aetiology of gastritis?

A

Commonest cause is helicobacter pylori infection

Other causes: 
Autoimmune gastritis (antibodies to gastric parietal cells and intrinsic factor) 
Viruses 
Duodeno- gastric reflux/ hiatus hernia
NSAIDs
Alcohol

Clinical presentation of gastritis?

A

Asymptomatic OR:
Epigastric pain
Vomitting
Haematemesis

Diagnosis of gastritis?

A

Histological diagnosis:
usually an incidental finding when a gastric mucosal biopsy is taken for histology at endoscopy

At endoscopy mucosa is reddened

Treatment for gastritis?

A

Ranitidine or PPI
H pylori eradication if needed
Bismuth subcitrate often needed
