gastric ulcers Flashcards
1
Q
how do gastric ulcers arise
A
- long term use of NSAIDS or corticosteroids
- can come from gastritis
2
Q
how do they work
A
what usually happens:
- either muscarinic or histamine (H2) receptors are activated
- this activates proton pumps, increasing acid secretion into the stomach lumen = gastric ulcers
what the drug does
- the activation then of PGE2 receptors inhibits the proton pump, decreasing acid secretion = no stomach lumen = no ulcers
3
Q
medicines used in practice
A
OMEPRAZOLE
- proton pump inhibitors which are absorbed in small intestine
- IV usually
RANITIDINE
- histamine (H2) antagonists
SUCRALFATE
- histamine (H2) antagonists
- forms as a paste and binds to ulcerated areas
MISOPROSTOL
- PGE1 analogue
ANTACIDS
- used in horses
