why use anti emetics
A
- prevent animals from dehydration
- to reduce pain
- prevent loss of electrolytes
- given for conditions such as parvovirus, pancreatitis, eating toxins

examples of the drug
A
Maropitant
- targets NK1 therefore useful for both peripheral areas in GI system and vomiting center
- long DOA, only given once daily
- use in dogs and cats
Ondansetron, dolasetron & granisetron
- target serotonin receptors
- used when using cytotoxic drugs & chemotherapy
Metoclopramide
- not used often, but effective - short DOA (given every 8 hrs)
- subjected to hepatic first-pass metabolism
- IV, IM or CRI
back up options if these 3 aren’t suitable for the animal
- prochlorperazine
- chlorpromazine
- acepromazine
