Q

explain the steps for the production of HCl

A
  1. water in and CO2 in –> H2CO3 –> H+ + HCO3-
  2. H+ and K+ cotransported across the luminal membrane (H+ out and K+ in)
  3. K+ transported back out into the lumen
  4. HCO3 and Cl- cotransported at interstitial membrane (HCO3 into interstitium –> blood and Cl into cell)
  5. Cl transported into lumen

Q

what is the mechanism of histamine stimulating HCl secretion

A

binds to H2 R on basement membrane –> AC converts ATP to cAMP. –> PKA stimulates the release of HCl

Q

what is the mechanism for ACh stimulating HCl release

A

binds to M3 R on basal membrane of parietal cell –> initiates Ca influx –> Ca binds to CAM –> stimulates HCl secretion

Q

what is the effect of caffeine on HCl production and how does this work

A

increases HCl secretion as it blocks phosphodiesterase breaking down cAMP to AMP so therefore more cAMP to activate PKA for HCl secretion
