gases and gas laws Flashcards
Charles’ Law
volume of a gas varies directly with its Kelvin temperature as long as the pressure and amount of gas remains constant
Boyles’ Law
the volume of a gas varies inversely with the pressure applied to it as long as the temperature and amount of gas remain constant
what causes decompression sickness?
nitrogen bubbles forming in the bloodstream and tissues of the body
Avogadro’s Law
the volume of a gas varies directly with the number of moles of gas as long as the pressure and temperature remain constant
Avogadro’s Law applications:
Lungs expand as the full with air. Exhaling decreases the volume of the lungs
As you blow up a basketball, you are forcing more gas molecules into it. The more molecules, the greater the volume. The basketball inflates.
Combined Gas Law:
p1 v1 t1
The Ideal Gas Law:
V must be in Liters
P must be in atmospheres
T must be in kelvins
n must be in moles
Dalton’s Law
total pressure of a gas in a container = sum of the partial pressures of the individual gases in the container
troposphere
where we live
lowest layer where most clouds are found and almost all weather occurs.
volcanic ash/eruptions
stratosphere
contains the jet streams and the ozone layer
volcanic ash/eruptions
mesosphere
burned up meteorites
thermosphere
northern lights
exosphere
space
