Gas Exchange / Transport Flashcards

1
Q

What does gas do?

A

Gas will always diffuse and move from an area of high pressure to one of lower pressure.

Q

What is Dalton’s Law Of Partial Pressure?

A

A law that states each gas in a mixture exerts its own pressure or partial pressure.
Partial Pressure of O2= 21.21kPa
Partial Pressure of CO2= 0.0303kPa

Q

What’s oxygen transport?
Where is partial pressure lowest (2)?

A

O2 is at its highest partial pressure in atmospheric air. This allows air to diffuse into lungs (alveoli) and then blood. The partial pressure of 02 in blood differs depending on location (lowest in veins and tissues highest in the atmosphere).

Q

Co2 transport

A

CO2 follows an opposite pattern to O2 (C02 partial pressure is highest in tissues and veins lowest in the atmosphere).

Q

What enzyme allows CO2 to combine? What’s the impact of this combination in relation to pressure?

A

The enzyme carbonic anhydrase allows some CO2 to combine with carbonic acid (H20 CO3). This decreases CO2 concentration and insures CO2 is diffused properly in the blood.
