Gas Exchange Surfaces Flashcards
Formula for volume and surface area of a sphere
Volume = 4/3x pie x radius cubed
Surface area= 4 x pie x radius squared
4 features of a gas exchange system
- Surface area needs to be as large as possible
- length of diffusion pathway has to be as small as possible
- diffusion gradient, has to be a high difference in concentration
- moist a gas exchange system need water to prevent it from drying up
Ciliated epithilium and goblet cell
Where are they found
Trachea, brochi, bronchioles, alveoli?
What is their function?
Ciliated epithilium is found in the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles it functions to waft mucus out of the lungs
Goblet cells are found with ciliated epithilium they function to secrete mucus to trap pathogens
Cartilage is a tissue of the gaseous exchange system
Where is it found and what is its function
Cartilage is found in the trachea and the bronchi
It prevents airways from collapsing due to low pressure when inspiring
Smooth muscle - gaseous exchange tissue
Where is it found and what is its function
Found in the brochi and bronchioles it’s contracts to decrease the diameter of the lumen
