Gas Exchange in Single-celled Organisms and Insects Flashcards
1
Q
How do single-celled organisms exchange gases?
A
-Diffusion
-Simple gas exchange between oxygen and carbon dioxide
2
Q
How do terrestrial insects exchange gases?
A
=Spiracles
-Openings (Pores) on the body surface
-Open and closed by a valve
-When open, water evaporates out of the pores and oxygen diffuses in
=Trachea
-Internal netwrok of tubes
-Allow for gases to reach every cell
=Tracheoles
-Smaller tubes branching off of trachea
-Filled with water. Water enters cells due to osmosis when cells produce lactate. This draws more air into the tracheoles, increasing the rate of gas diffusion.
