Gas Exchange/breathing Flashcards
What happens when you breathe?
gas exchange
what is gas exchange?
When you breathe, you take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide
where does gas exchange take place?
In you lungs
what are your lungs made out of?
They are made out of elastic tissue that expand when you breath in
what are your lungs protected by?
they are protected by your ribs
what is the trachea
the trachea a a large tube (windpipe)
what is the bronchus
a smaller tube
what is the bronchiole
a tiny tube
what is the order of the respiratory system?
-air enters your body through mouth and body
-trachea
-bronchus
-bronchiole
-alveolus
- oxygen then diffuses into the blood
when you inhale oxygen what is it used for?
it’s used in respiration to transfer energy, respiration produces carbon dioxide which needs to be removed from your body.
what happens when you exhale?
it removes all the carbon dioxide
how do you breathe?
your muscles in your chest tightens or contracts
what happens when you inhale?
- the muscles between your ribs contract, this pulls your ribcage up and out
-the diaphragm contracts, it moves down
-the volume in your chest increases
-the pressure inside your lungs decrease, this draws air into your lungs
what happens when you exhale?
The muscles between your ribs relax, this pulls your ribcage down and in
-the diaphragm relaxes, it moves up
-the volume inside your chest decreases
-the pressure inside your chest increases, this pushes air out of your lungs
how can you measure lung volume?
you can use a plastic bottle
