Gas Exchange Flashcards
an expectorant used to aid in the expectoration of excessive mucus that has accumulated in the respiratory tract
guaifenesin
albuterol (beta agonist) relieves symptoms of an asthma attack by…
dilating the bronchi
positive response to guaifenesin?
increased sputum production
decongestants have adrenergic effects that may result in what?
hypertension
when using a metered-dose inhaler, what helps the patient coordinate the activation of the inhaler with their breathing?
using the MDI with a spacer device
what physiological process protects the lower respiratory system?
goblet cells secrete mucous to trap particles and irritants
what med blocks the action of histamine?
cetirizine
what med can help with inflammation
prednisone
what is the #1 action in reducing the incidence of lung disease?
use of protective equipment
narrow airway lumen due to inflammation, intermittent bronchospasms, stimulation of disease process by allergies
characteristics of asthma
increased AP diameter, decrease appetite, unexplained weight loss, sitting in a chair leaning forward with elbows on knees
COPD findings
anticholingeric effects (dry mouth, nose, throat), mild drowsiness
cetirizine side effects
teaching points of cetirizine
fluids, hard candy for dryness, do not drive until know effects
this med dilates the bronchi
albuterol
tremors, jittery, tachycardia, heart palpitation
side effects of albuterol
guaifenesin client education:
increase fluids, take with food for GI upset, change positions gradually, sit/lay down if dizzy
what do you use dextromethorpan for?
nonproductive cough
teaching points of? taper off, report high blood sugar signs, report weight gain/edema, weight bearing exercises, vitamin C
prednisone
what is phenylephrine?
decongestant
CNS stimulation, HTN, rebound congestion poss. with nasal sprays, tachycardia
phenylephrine side effects
Increased AP diameter, tripod position, decreased appetite, weight loss, pursed lip breathing, decreased breath sounds, wheezing
s/s of COPD
smoking cessation, oxygen (keep sats > 90%), evaluate for irritants, vaccine (flu & pneumonia), RT, PT, nutrition therapy, teach pursed lip breathing for anxiety
nursing interventions for COPD
