Gas Exchange Flashcards
Dalton’s law of partial pressure
Each gas in a mixture exists in its own pressure, which is proportional to the total value
External respiration
Gases are exchanged between the alveoli and the blood in the capillaries
Air entering the alveoli’s
Air entering the alveoli’s has a high O2 concentration and the blood has a low O2 concentration so O2 diffuses into the blood
-30% occurs by facilitated diffusion
-where no energy is expended but gas exchange is sped up
Internal respiration
Occurs when oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in the tissues
Oxygen in the blood is transported in two ways
1) 99% of the time by hemoglobin
2) 1% is dissolved in the blood
