gangrene Flashcards
what is gangrene?
Gas gangrene, also known as clostridial myonecrosis, is a severe bacterial infection characterized by tissue necrosis, systemic toxemia, and gas production, often occurring in traumatic wounds or surgical sites.
what causes gas gangrene?
Clostridium perfringens,
These bacteria thrive in low oxygen environments and cause extensive tissue damage through toxin production and hydrolytic enzyme secretion
features of gangrene?
Acute onset of severe localized pain
Minimal local inflammation
Skin darkening and spreading erythema
Fever, with the patient being hot to touch
Gas production in the affected area
Distinctive and potent smell from the infected area
ix for gangrene?
Radiographic examination: May reveal the presence of gas in the tissue.
Laboratory tests: Can indicate infection through increased white blood cell count and inflammatory markers.
Tissue cultures: Useful for identifying causative bacteria.
mx for gangrene?
Urgent surgical debridement: Removal of all necrotic tissue is critical.
Antibiotic administration: Given as an adjunct therapy to surgical intervention.
Amputation: In severe cases, may be required to control the spread of the infection.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: While not routinely used, it may have some benefits given the anaerobic nature of the causative bacteria.
