Gametogenesis Flashcards
The first step of gametogenesis is….
Proliferation of primordial germ cells by mitosis
When does mitosis of in germ cells of males occur?
From puberty onwards
What are the 2 types of spermatagonia and what do they form?
Type A - forms blood testes barrier
Type B - form spermatozoa
Same cell type, diff areas
When does M2 continue in males?
After puberty
What are the steps of spermatogenesis?
A (mitosis)
|
Spermatagonia —-> B –> primary spermatocyte -(M1)-> 2xsecondary spermatocyte -(M2)-> 4xspermatids
What happens in spermiogenesis?
Spermatids mature in the epididymis (for about 64 days) to spermatazoa
When does female mitosis take place?
Pre birth in fetus to primary oocyte
When do M1 and M2 occur in females?
M1 stops until menstruation
M2 only occurs after fertilization
What are the steps of oogenesis?
Primary oocyte -(M1)-> secondary oocyte and polar body -(M2)-> oogonia and 3xpolar bodies
Polar bodies—> apoptose
What does meiosis maintain….
Keeps chromosome number constant from generation to generation after fertilization
Where does meiosis occur in males and females?
Males - seminiferous tubules
Females - ovaries
Is puberty earlier in girls or boys?
Earlier in girls than boys
In puberty, what is the primary and secondary developments?
- Development by FSH and LH stimulating gonadotropins
2. Development by adrenal androgens
