Aldosterone Flashcards
What is aldosterone?
What is it produced by?
Steroid hormone
Zona glomerulosa cells in adrenal cortex of adrenal glands
What does Aldosterone act on?
Principal cells of the collecting duct
What does aldosterone stimulate?
The transcription of ENaC to increase Na+ reabsorption and H2O reabsorption
Is aldosterone faster or slower than ADH? Why?
More slowly than ADH as it induces changes in gene expression and protein synthesis
What does ANP do?
Control Na+ reabsorption
What cells synthesise and secrete ANP?
Cells in the cardiac atria
How does ANP control Na+ reabsorption?
Inhibits Na+ reabsorption by blocking the ENaC in collecting ducts
What are the functions of ANP?
Decrease ENaC
Decrease Aldosterone
Increase GFR (for Na+ excretion) - dilate AA
(Decrease BP)
What does angiotensin 2 cause to happen?
Stimulates aldosterone
Vasoconstriction efferent arteriole
Increased Na+ reabsorption in PCT
Stimulate ADH from pos pit
