Q

How do Gamelan musicians learn the music?

A

Gamelan musicians learn the notes practically rather than from reading music. Gamelan players use a number system called ‘kepatihan’ to remember the tune rather than using letters or staff notation.
This makes music more accessible e.g. 1=C, 2=D, 3=E, 4=F, 5=G etc.
