Galaxies Flashcards
What is the order of the planets in our solar system?
Sun, Mercury, Venus, earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto
What is a nebula? (3)
Cloud of gas and dust
Remains of stars
Where new stars and planets are formed
What is a galaxy?
System of millions of stars, planets and gas clouds held together by gravity EG Milky Way
What is a black hole?
A region of space having a gravitational field so strong that no matter or even light can escape
What do most galaxies have in the centre?
A black hole
What is the escape velocity of a black hole?
Greater than the speed of light
What light do black holes release?
X-Ray lights
What is a quasar? (4)
Remote celestial object
Large amounts of energy
Contain black holes
Stage in the evolution of galaxies
What is a satellite Galaxy?
A galaxy that orbits a larger Galaxy due to gravitational attraction
What is a spiral galaxy? (2)
Consist flat rotating discs
Contain stars, gas and dust
What is the central concentration of stars in a spiral galaxy known as?
The bulge
What is an elliptical galaxy? (3)
Ellipsodial shape
3 dimensional without structure
Stars randomly orbit centre
What is an irregular galaxy? (2)
No structure
Dust makes it hard to see
What is a lenticular galaxy?
Inbetween a spiral and an elliptical galaxy
What is an interactive galaxy?
When 2 galaxies merge into 1
What is the solar system?
A collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit of the sun
