G2 Vertebral Column Flashcards
What is the horizontal ligament across the dens in the atlas?
Transverse ligament of axis?
Which causes more damage to the spinal cord, rupture of transverse ligament of the atlas, or fracture of the dens?
More damage is caused by rupture of the ligament because it allows the atlas to move anteriorly and smash the spinal cord against the dens.
What are the defining features of thoracic vertebrae?
Heart or triangular shaped body Close lamina Long spinous processes Vertical facets Rib articulations
What are the three rib articulations on a thoracic vertebra?
inferior, superior and transverse costal facets
Which vertebrae permit and limit the different kinds of rotation?
Cervical: allow flexion/extension, and lateral flexion, slightly limited rotation
Thoracic: Permit rotation, limit flexion/extension, lateral flexion
Lumbar: Permit flexion/extension, lateral flexion, very limited rotation
If an injection is made in the sacral hiatus, what space does the injection go into?
Epidural space
What is spondylolysis?
Breakage of articulations associated with lamina
Spondylolisthesis is actual displacement of vertebrae
What are the two ligament between spinous processes?
Interspinous ligament goes between spinous processes,
Supraspinous ligament goes along the posterior surface of the spinous processes
