Green manure:
a temporary crop intended to be buried quickly to provide nutrients for the subsequent crop.
Gestation:
: the condition of females carrying one or more fetuses.
GMQ:
Gain Moyen Quotidien (Daily Weight Gain), an animal’s weight gain in g or kg/day.
Granulates:
concentrated feed distributed to livestock (see concentrates).
Grain size:
size distribution of soil components based on their diameter.
Gravel:
soil particles whose diameter is between 2 and 20mm.
Gross margin
an accounting tool for calculating the technical and economic performance of various farming activities. It can also be calculated generally for all activities. It is calculated directly by subtracting specific variable costs for a given activity from revenue for this activity.
Matrice: in French, the word matrice (“matrix”) is synonymous with the word “uterus”.
GMO:
(genetically modified organism), a living organism whose gene pool has been altered by genetic engineering.
Honeycomb bag:
second stomach pouch in ruminants. Syn: second stomach, reticulum.
Haymaking:
set of processes aimed at reducing the water content of green fodder to transform it into hay.
Haying:
the process of preserving fodder by drying it in the sun or ventilating it in a barn. Syn: haymaking, hay harvesting.
Hay:
fodder stored in a dry form after haying.
Hectare (ha):
a unit of surface area corresponding to 10,000m².
Herbicide:
an active substance or preparation capable of killing plants.
Harrow:
a trailer-mounted item of agricultural equipment with close-set teeth enabling shallow soil tillage.
