G: Environmental Factors Influencing Growth part 2 Flashcards
what are cardinal temp
the min temp, optimal temp and max temp for growth
what happens at min temp
enzymatic rxns are too slow to support growth and membranes will solididy
what happens above max temp
membranes will melt and proteins will denature
what happens at optimal temp
closer to the max temp than min. bacteria have adapted their proteins and membrane to fn at diff temps
what is the range btwn min and max temp
typically ~30 C
What are psychrophile’s optimum temp and where are they found
~15 C. Found in polar ice and cold water
What are psychotrophs’s optimum temp and where are they found
~25 C. common cause of food spoilage, can grow in the refrigerator at 4 C
What are mesophile’s optimum temp and where are they found
for bacteria that live on body is ~37 C
for soil organism is ~30 C
What are thermophile’s optimum temp and where are they found
~60 C. found in compost and hot tubs. bacteria used in yogurt production are thermophiles
What are hyperthermophile’s optimum temp and where are they found
over 80 C. Archea found in hot springs and deep sea vents
What does obligate aerobes require
O2 as termnal electron of ETC
What does microaerophiles require
O2 as their ETC but are killed by atmospheric levels
What does faculatative anaerobes require
grow best w/O2 as TEA but can grow w/out it
What does aerotolerant anaerobes require
don’t use O2 for a TEA but aren’t killed by it
What does obligate anaerobes require
don’t use O2 for a TEA and are killed by toxic oxygen derivatives
What are toxic O2 derivatives
O2 is highly reactive moelcule and very electronegative
what is symbol for superoxide radical
O2-
what is symbol for hydrogen eperoxide
H2O2
what is symbol for hydroxyl radical
H2O + OH.
how are oxygen derivatives toxic
can damage cellular components by oxidizing them. kills cells
Name 2 protective enzymes
supoeroxide dismultase and catalase/other enzymes
What is the catalase test
add H202 to slide and then some bacteria. if bubbles visible, then catalase positive
Give an example of aerotolerant and catalase -ive
Streptococcus spp.
How can we grow microaerophiles and obligate anaerobes
grown in environment w/little or n O2. candle jar or jar with oxygen consumption system
Some bacteria require higher CO2 levels than atmospheric levels. What can we use
candle jar or CO2 incubator
