Further Additional Biology Flashcards
What is the thorax?
The top part of your body
What is osmosis?
Movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of high concentration to a region of low water concentration
What’s a stomata?
An exchange surface cell on the underside of the leaf that CO2 diffuses across
What’s active transport?
Low concentration to high concentration
What are villus and how are they effective?
Tiny projections in the intestines. They increase surface area so an absorb more
What is a phloem tube?
Transport food substances made in the leaves to growing regions and storage organs in a plant
What’s transpiration?
Loss of water from the plant
What happens in the right side of the heart?
Blood flows into right atrium from vena cava. Atrium contracts and is pushed in the right ventricle through the valve and out the pulmonary vein into the lungs
What happens in the left atrium of the heart?
Blood flows in from the pulmonary vein into the left atrium. This contracts and goes into the left ventricle which is then passed through the valve and out the aorta and around the body
What are xylem tubes?
Made of dead cells, take water and minerals up from the root to the stem and leaves in the transpiration stream.
What do arteries do?
Carry blood away from the heart, thick so carry blood under pressure
What do capillaries do?
Involved with the exchange of materials at the tissues
What do veins do?
Take blood back to the heart, low pressure blood so walls aren’t thick
What is plasma?
The liquid that carries everything in the blood, CO2, urea, hormones, antibodies, antitoxins
What are platelets?
They help blood clot, small fragments of cells and have no nucleus
