Fungi Flashcards
1
Q
What are the common characteristics of fungi?
A
- Eukaryotic
- Unicellular reproduction via sporulation
- Heterotrophic
- Cell walls made of chitin
- Grow hyphae
- Ergosterol in cell membranes
2
Q
What are the common characteristics of yeasts?
A
- Unicellular
2. Do not use hyphae for nutrient accumulation
3
Q
How do yeasts reproduce?
A
They reproduce via yeast budding?
4
Q
What is yeast budding?
A
Yeast budding - mitosis resulting in production of identical cell smaller in size that leaves a scar once the bud detaches.
5
Q
What is the lifecycle of yeasts?
A
Yeast lifecycle alternates between:
- Haploid (n) - gametes develop for fertilisation and produce a 2n zygote
- Diploid (2n) - undergoes mitosis and returns to haploid form
6
Q
What is chitin?
A
Chitin - beta-linked polymers of N-acetyl glucosamine that allows penetration through food and immense tensile strength.
