fungi Flashcards
what are the 3 main divisions of fungi?
ALL 3 END IN MYCETES
1. basidomycetes
2.ascomycetes
3. zygomycetes
basido, asco, zygo - mycetes
What kinds of fungi are basidiomycetes?
some moulds,mushrooms and FEW yeast
what kind of fungi are ascomycetes?
mould yeast & SOME mushrooms
what kind of fungi are zygomycetes ?
mould only
what are the sexual & asexual spores of Basidiomycetes?
sexual - basidospores
asexual-condium
what are the sexual & asexual spores of ascomycetes?
sexual-ascospore
asexual-condium
What are the spores of zygomycetes ?
sexual-zygospores
asexual-sporangiospores
what are the two main type of fungi infections?
- dermatophytes
2.systemic fungi
what do dermatophytes attack and why?
they attack the skin
this is because they digest keratin as a nutrient
what do dermatophytes cause?
they cause ringworm
give an example of a dermatophyte
Pityriasis Versicolor
Yeast that forms hyphae in skin
who do fungi normally infect?
immunocompromised patients
What is candida?
fungi infection cuased by yeast (GI too)
Whats the main reason its hard to find drugs to specifcally target fungal infections?
their eukaryotic
unlike bacteria which is prokaryotes, also drugs affecting fungi also affect the body
Whats a basidium?
A section of fungi with sterigmata on the surface which attach to basidiospores which can be realeased to spread the fungi.
